In world beset with division, schism and conflict, how can we ever begin to find common ground? Of course, difference and disagreement are an essential part of the human experience, so what guidance are we given to deal with difference. Islamic scholarship didn't just provide an answer to this difficult question: it provided a system of manners, ethics and morals that we now call the ?d?b al-ikhtilaf. In the face of growing narrowness, hatred between rival points of view and suspicion, the "art of disagreement" is quickly being lost.
