Al-Ajrumiyyah

What is the Ajrumiyya? Why is it so important to study?
The Arabs themselves had long before initiated a formal and systematic methodology to teach Arabic Grammar to their children. From the systems the Arabs employed one text in particular shines far more clearly than any other, it has withstood the test of time and is still after more than seven hundred years since its authors’ death, being taught throughout the Arab world. It is the text of Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Dau’d as-Sinhaji, known as Ibn Ajrum. The text itself although not named as such by the author, has become known as ‘al-Ajrumiyyah. The Ajrumiyyah, is the quintessence of Arabic grammar, its status is largely unchallenged as an excellent introduction to this first field of learning, which every scholar must master before delving into other Arabic literature. We find much attention has been paid to it amongst Arab scholars over a considerable period of time.
Al Ajrumiyyah is a classical primer in Arabic grammar. Famously taught around the world, the text introduces the student to the vast world of Arabic grammar allowing one to gain the basic tools required to start understanding the science of Arabic morphology and syntax.
The aim and objectives is to :
1. Develop a better relationship with the Qur’an based around the Arabic language
2. To understand and learn the basic and foundational principles of Arabic grammar.
3. To develop a love for the Arabic language
The Messenger of Allah said, ‘Learn the inflections of speech, in order that you may learn the [correct] inflection of the Qur’an. It is reported that the famous grammarian, Sibawayh, only undertook the study of grammar after committing an error of grammar during his study of Hadith, al-Asm?‘I held the view that whoever studied hadith without learning grammar was to be categorized with those who forge hadith. The importance of proficiency in the field of Arabic grammar has never been called into question, indeed the word,a l-‘Ir? b, which we translate as ‘inflection’, also means clarity and eloquence, Muslims acknowledge that the Messenger of Allah was the most eloquent of people and as imitating him is seen as a virtue, speaking his language with its rules and style became a religious virtue too. The Ajrumiyyah, quite untypically, does not begin with any introductory praise of Allah or even any salutations upon the Prophet, except in the version used in the commentary, al-Kaw?kib al-Duriyyah, where such additions may have been the work of the commentator. Rather Ibn Ajrum begins by discussing grammar immediately after the customary Basmala.

Shaykh Uwais Nadwi

Shaykh Uwais Nadwi began his studies in the conventional Maktabs scattered across England. During his secondary school, he enrolled in the newly established Jamiat al-Ilm Wa al-Huda in Blackburn. There he learnt tajwid, parts of the Qur’an, and went on to study the ‘Alim course for another two years.
After completing his intial studies, he decided to travel to India where he toured all the renowned Islamic seminaries. He settled in Lucknow and spent the next 5-6 years studying at the Nadwat al-Ulama where he completed his ‘Alimiyyah in Islamic Studies and Arabic Literature, and his Postgraduate in Hadith Studies. He traveled extensively to meet and learn from prominent luminaries, the likes of Shaykh ul Hadith Shaykh Yunus in Saharanpur, Mufti Abdul Khaliq Madrasi in Deoband, Mawlana Nur al-Hasan in Kandhla, and Shaykh Abu Mahfuz al-Ma’sumi in Calcutta, amongst others.

Upon his return from India, Shaykh Uwais enrolled in a postgraduate Islamic Studies course at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), from which graduated in the year 2008, His final dissertation, ‘Text Criticism (Naqd al-Mutun) in light of Imam Muslim’s Kitab al-Tamyiz’, reflects his primary interests.
